In 2014, an important milestone occurred in the domain industry — the introduction of a large number of new domain zones (New gTLDs). This opened up many new opportunities for users looking for creative and memorable domain names.

Most of these new zones operate just like the familiar .COM, .COM.UA, or .CO.UA domains. However, there is one key difference: different domain names can have different prices. What does that mean exactly? Let’s take a closer look.

In the .COM zone, all domains cost the same — whether it’s one character long, fifty characters, a meaningful word, or a random string of letters. You’ll never pay more than about 470 UAH for a new domain — every name has the same standard price.

But what happens when you try to register a domain in a new domain zone? Let’s use .SITE as an example.

Pick up a domain name you always dreamed of

For example, the domain jklo.site might cost around 1000 UAH — a typical price. But if you want something more meaningful, like blog.site, the price could increase dramatically — even up to 300,000 UAH or more.

This happens because “blog.site” contains a popular, generic word. Each new gTLD administrator maintains their own list of “special” domains and assigns a premium price to them. This pricing is entirely determined by the registry, and registrars — including NIC.UA — have no control over it.

As a result, short domains or names with attractive, popular words (for example, blog.*, rent.*, hosting.*) are classified as premium domains and come with a much higher price tag.

Please note: it’s not always possible to check in advance whether a domain is considered “premium.” If you place an order and the domain turns out to be on the premium list, the order may be canceled and the payment refunded to your account.
