The "status" field in Whois shows the current state of a registered domain. Below is a description of main statuses.

Status Description
okStatus set when no other statuses apply. All operations on the domain are allowed.
inactiveStatus set when there are no hosts in the domain.
clientHoldStatus set by the registrar. Domain is removed from the zone. Domain operation is suspended.
serverHoldStatus may be set by the registry. Domain is removed from the zone. Domain operation is suspended.
clientTransferProhibitedStatus set by the registrar. Transfer prohibited.
clientUpdateProhibitedStatus set by the registrar. Updates to the domain are prohibited.
clientRenewProhibitedStatus set by the registrar. Renewal prohibited. Does not affect auto-renew.
clientDeleteProhibitedStatus set by the registrar. Deletion of the domain is prohibited.
serverTransferProhibitedStatus may be set by the registry. Transfer prohibited.
serverUpdateProhibitedStatus may be set by the registry. Updates to the domain are prohibited.
serverRenewProhibitedStatus may be set by the registry. Renewal prohibited. Does not affect auto-renew.
serverDeleteProhibitedStatus may be set by the registry. Deletion prohibited.
pendingTransferStatus automatically set during domain transfer.
autoRenewGracePeriodStatus after the domain registration period ends. Registrar can still renew the domain for the next period.
redemptionPeriodStatus after autoRenewGracePeriod. Domain can still be restored.
pendingDeleteStatus after redemptionPeriod. Domain will be deleted from the registry in 5 days.
