310,000 pre-registrations in the .XXX domain

The .XXX domain, registration for which will begin in the next few months, is expected to be quite popular among registrants. Currently, nearly 310,000 domains in the .XXX zone have been pre-registered, despite protests from the adult industry.

Pre-registration has been ongoing for several months, and after ICANN approval, it reached 30,000 additional registrations in 24 hours, and more than 80,000 registrations in the three days following approval.

Pre-registration does not obligate you to purchase a name, but it does provide benefits to the pre-registrant.

Pre-registration has been available to registered adult website owners since February 1, 2010. Owners of such domain names can submit a request to reserve the corresponding .XXX domains. Applicants can submit their domains through the ICM website and, if successfully registered, will receive a code that can be used after ICANN accredits registrars.

Intellectual property owners who do not own adult websites may also request a reservation for a domain they own and use for business.
