Apple and RIM to face lawsuit over patent infringement

A patent infringement lawsuit has been filed against Apple and Research in Motion. The lawsuit was filed by software developer Openwave. The lawsuit alleges that Apple and RIM infringed five of its patents. The company filed its claims in the Delaware District Court and simultaneously with the U.S. International Trade Commission.

The reasons for the lawsuit were Apple mobile devices – the iPhone smartphone, both generations of the iPad tablet and the iPod Touch player, the same iPhone, as well as RIM devices – Blackberry and the Playbook tablet computer.

Openwave's patents relate to offline email, and another patent concerns cloud computing.

Openwave's demand to Apple and RIM is a complete ban on sales of mobile devices in the United States, in addition to a fine.
