Apple is the most attractive target for typosquatters.

Sophos specialists conducted a study of more than 2,000 popular domain names; these domains differed by only one letter from a number of popular domains - Facebook.com, Google.com, Twitter.com, Apple.com, and Microsoft.com.

The study's authors concluded that not all websites hosted on misspelled domains are typosquatter sites.

Some domains were perfectly legitimate and just happened to be similar to the most popular domain names.

But the most attractive target for typosquatters was Apple.

Apple is followed by Google, Facebook, Twitter and Microsoft.

Of the 2,300 registered domains with typos, only 1,500 were delegated. Moreover, only 0.07% of the domains with typos led to malicious sites.

In addition, 2.7% of such domains were greylisted – they were previously associated with phishing, online fraud, or spam distribution.

And 6% redirected users to suspicious search sites.
