H-W Technology has filed a lawsuit against 32 companies for infringing its 2009 patent, "Internet Protocol (IP) Phone with Search and Advertising Capability." The company is demanding a cease-and-desist order against the companies for products that infringe the patent and for financial compensation.
Telnic announces the introduction of two-letter and numeric .tel names
Telnic Limited, the administrator of the .tel top-level domain (TLD), announced that two-letter and numeric .tel domain names will be introduced starting June 1, 2011. The introduction of the new names will take place in two stages. The first stage, a special registration offer, will begin at 3:00 PM British Summer Time on Wednesday, June 1, 2011, and will last for two weeks. During this stage, any individual or legal entity can obtain a short or numeric .tel name at a special registration price.
Libyan domain zone poses a threat to website owners
Websites in the Libyan domain zone are under threat. The owner of Letter.ly was unable to renew the domain delegation because the registrar was unable to operate due to military action in the country.
More than 80% of domain disputes involved the .COM domain.
According to statistics from the Arbitration and Mediation Center of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), last year trademark owners filed more than 2,500 complaints concerning 4,000 domains. This number is 16% higher than in 2008 and 28% higher than in 2009. One of the reasons for this increase in domain disputes is the simplification of the WIPO application process and the electronic case monitoring procedure (eUDRP) for both parties.
Runet's Birthday: On April 7, the .RU domain celebrates its 17th anniversary.
On April 7, Russia's largest national domain, .RU, will turn 17 years old. On this day in 1994, the first Russian domain zone, .RU, was launched. Since then, April 7 has been considered the birthday of the Russian segment of the World Wide Web—Runet. By its seventeenth anniversary, .RU had already surpassed 3,000,000 registered names and entered the top 10 largest national domains in the world.
Global patenting volumes are growing, with Korea and China leading the way.
Last year, the World Intellectual Property Organization received 39,687 applications for international trademark registration, which is 12.8% more than in 2009. Intensive growth occurred in Korea (+42.2%), Italy (+38.7%), the United States (+29.6%), the European Union (+26.9%) and Japan (+20.2%).

Japanese residents will receive free .ORG domain extensions.
Public Interest Registry (PIR), the administrator of the .ORG domain zone, announced plans to offer free renewals to Japanese registrants. The free renewal applies to domains whose delegations expired this month or are set to expire this year.

March Registration Market: Generic Domains Rule the Roost
Hostmaster published data on registrar statistics for March 2011. March was a busy month, with over 4,000 domain names appearing on the Ukrainian Internet. 3,500 new domains were registered in the .COM.UA zone, with .KIEV.UA (over 600 new domains) and IN.UA (almost a thousand new names) proving popular. However, some regional domains (kherson.ua, poltava.ua, rv.ua) showed negative results.
