Uanet audience, November 2009: research by Gemius
According to internet research by gemiusAudience, the Ukrainian internet audience in November 2009 was approximately 7.6 million (real users); in October and September 2009, it was 7.46 million and 7.35 million, respectively. This represents a 7.8% increase compared to November 2008, or approximately 600,000 users.
The most important thing to note is the significant increase in the average internet user's activity across Ukraine as a whole. The average time per user devoted to the internet per month increased over the year from 2 hours 53 minutes (November 2008) to 6 hours 28 minutes (November 2009). In October 2009, it was 5 hours 51 minutes.
That is, the time spent online by the average Ukrainian user has more than doubled over the course of a year.
Some changes are observed in the composition of Ukraine's online audience. User groups that were less active in previous months have become more active.
For example, the gender distribution in November 2009 was as follows: men made up 52%, women 48%. That is, the shares were almost equal (compared to 56-44% in October 2009), but men remained more active and spent more time online. Men accounted for 54% of all internet page views.
Younger users, users without permanent employment, and users with low incomes also became more active.
There are no major changes in the age distribution, but the proportion of people aged 55 and older has increased slightly (by 1%).
Kyiv remains the leading city by region, accounting for 35.9% of the total online audience. Residents of the Kyiv region (10.9%), Dnipropetrovsk (9.2%), Odesa (7.9%), Kharkiv (5.9%), Donetsk (5.6%), and Lviv (4.6%) follow. The share of other regions, which together account for 20% of Ukraine's online audience, has decreased.
It's worth noting that the most active average user in November lives in the Rivne region. While Rivne accounts for approximately one percent of the region's population, the average user from this region completed 449.51 page views and spent 7 hours and 40 minutes online. The average user activity ranking by region is as follows:
Khmelnytskyi region - 446.55 page views - 7 hours 32 minutes.
Crimea - 420.26 page views - 9 h. 20 min.
Zhitomir - 403.04 page views - 8 hours 34 minutes.
Cherkasy - 398.48 page views - 8 hours 58 minutes.
The economic crisis inevitably impacted the growth of the Ukrainian Internet's audience. The number of internet users continues to grow, but the rate of growth slowed somewhat in 2009. Thus, as noted above, the monthly audience growth in November 2009 compared to November 2008 was 7.8%. Meanwhile, the audience in November 2008 compared to November 2007 grew by 32% – from 5.2 million to 7 million (real users).
