The Australian Football League wants its own top-level domain.

The Australian Football League (AFL) is preparing to apply for its own top-level domain, AFL, as part of the New gTLD program.

Commenting on their plans to launch the League, its representatives stated that the purpose of obtaining the domain is to create a platform for football fans to communicate with each other and publish content. Furthermore, the new domain could open up new opportunities for potential investors. The League also does not rule out the possibility that such actions are an attempt to protect the League's brand.

This isn't the first attempt to create a top-level domain for sports organizations. In 2008, a project to create the .SPORT top-level domain was presented, and American basketball player Shaquille O'Neal also proposed creating the .BASKETBALL domain.

As early as 2010, the Adrenaline TLD corporation announced its readiness to create domains for five sports: .SKI (skiing), .SURF (surfing), .BIKE (bicycle), .BOARD, and .SKATE (skating).

Previously, governments of individual territories of Austria expressed their desire to submit applications for the domains of the cities of SYDNEY and MELBOURNE, and the states of VICTORIA and NSW (New South Wales).
