Where did Black Friday come from?
It seems odd that such a joyous day for bargain hunters is called "Black Friday." The term "Black Friday" first appeared in the American press in 1951, but it was more about workers not showing up for work than about a shopping frenzy. Since the 1960s, however, the Friday after Thanksgiving has become known as the day when shoppers clear out shelves at triple the speed of sales—no doubt in anticipation of the Christmas holidays.
And who would dare call such a blessed date black? The valiant highway patrol, working 12-hour shifts on such days due to the massive, hours-long traffic jams! Mentioned once in a Philadelphia newspaper, the name stuck, spreading throughout America, and soon the world.
And then comes Cyber Monday...
Continuing the story, I'll tell you how the rise of e-commerce has changed the online shopping schedule. What do American white-collar workers do when they return to their work computers on the Monday after Thanksgiving? Do they get down to their tedious work? No, rather, they rush to buy goods online directly from their work computers.
Online retailers noticed a sharp spike in sales on the Monday after Thanksgiving, leading them to dub it "Cyber Monday." However, e-commerce statistics researchers noted that this day doesn't actually mark the peak of sales. But the marketing myth stuck, and today, online retailers embrace it, receiving several times more orders on the Monday in late November.
