With the rise of social media popularity, domain names will not lose their importance.

Tim Schumacher of Sedo stated at the Domain Pulse conference in Vienna that domain names will remain important for advertising and a company's image. However, Sabine Hoffmann of the trading company ambuzzador noted that there are now other means of promoting a company or trademark, such as social media.

Christian Kallenberg, editor-in-chief of FHM Germany, spoke at the conference. He closed the FHM domain in Germany. He now hopes that the magazine's promotion via Facebook will be more successful.

Experts from Webnames.ru believe this option can be much cheaper than website maintenance, but it is also much riskier.

Schumacher and Hoffman did not support this method, believing it has a significant drawback: it could cause the company or trademark owner to lose control. For example, a social network might introduce paid services that would increase a page's ranking or the number of friends. This could make the business very costly.

Other significant problems include changes in the rules of the social network, the introduction of restrictions on commercial activity on it, a decline in popularity, or even the closure of the social network site.

Many experts believe that social media promotion should be implemented simultaneously with the development of a domain name and a website that would redirect visitors from your company's site to the Facebook site, such as facebook.brandname.at.
