Instagram announced plans to enter the NFT space around March 2022. The actual steps were taken in May. Meta tested the new features with a limited number of users in the US, with plans to expand to other countries. Currently, the platform allows users to create, showcase, buy, and sell tokens directly on Instagram. A useful addition is the ability to view collection metadata directly from the Instagram marketplace.OpenSea. 

How does this work?

To get started, you connect one or more crypto wallets to your Instagram account. Currently, the following blockchains are supported:

• Ethereum;
• Polygon;
• Solana;
• Flow.

Wallets available for connection:

• MetaMask;
• Rainbow;
• Phantom;
• Trust Wallet; 
• Coinbase Wallet; 
• Dapper. 

When you connect your wallet to Instagram, the platform collects and organizes publicly available blockchain data and links it to your account.

Once published, the NFT acquires a shimmering effect and contains all publicly available information: the NFT description, the creator's name, and the owner's name, depending on privacy settings.

The created NFT can be added to your wallet or sold on Instagram. Currently, the platform only allows purchase of digital collectibles created on Instagram.

Once you purchase a collectible, it is added to the crypto wallet you linked to your account.

The platform does not charge for posting or sharing digital collectibles on Instagram.

Royalty

At this stage, Instagram is actively supporting the ongoing turbulentdiscussionMeta is a royalty-free platform that allows users to set fees for collectibles created on Instagram. However, Meta does not participate in commission payments for collectibles listed on third-party marketplaces.

When purchasing digital collectibles on Instagram, please keep in mind that they can only be resold on third-party marketplaces, not Instagram.

What are Instagram NFTs?

First and foremost, these are the platform's own avatars, reminiscent of the Horizon universe. The possibility of acquiring or collaborating with a well-known NFT collection to add interesting characters to the Instagram metaverse was discussed.

The first was a promotion with DrifterShoots, which took place in early November. The collection sold out in seconds.

The second was a collaboration with Vinnie Hager to release 25 copies of his work "Lollygagging." The tokens also sold out in a flash.
