Cisco Releases IPv6 Transition Products

Cisco Systems has introduced new products and services designed to support the gradual transition to the new Internet protocol, IPv6.

The company announced the addition of IPv6-specific options to its routers and switches. This will allow corporate users to simplify the deployment of two-tier networks and operate simultaneously with both IPv4 and IPv6.

These new products enable the unification of data between IPv4 and IPv6 networks at the level of specific information and software.

One of the main challenges in transitioning to the new protocol is its lack of backward compatibility. Providers offer either IPv4 or IPv6 addresses. If a user on an IPv4 network tries to access an IPv6 website, they won't be able to. Therefore, companies are essentially forced to duplicate resources.

Now, using Cisco's LISP (Location/ID Separation Protocol) technology, users can automate the creation and modification of IPv6 using IPv4 access. This option can be used as a transition to the new protocol.
