Doctor Web identified the main malicious schemes of 2010.
Doctor Web has identified the top 10 malicious programs and schemes most often used by fraudsters in 2010. In addition to developers of various antivirus and security software, law enforcement agencies are also fighting Internet criminals, but the presence of a huge number of different fraud schemes only helps the development of crime.
10th place in the ranking is occupied by pseudo-services. Very often on the Internet you can find sites that are ready to provide interesting, illegal and even secret information for a fee. Most often, scammers offer to pay via SMS messages. Instead, they send links to supposedly secret resources, which are actually ordinary sites with free content. Or they simply accept payment and offer nothing in return.
In 9th place in the ranking are fake archives. Fraudsters create fake torrent trackers or fake file repositories from which they offer to download movies, music or books. The files are downloaded in the form of an archive, when unpacked, a message is displayed that a certain amount must be sent for complete unpacking. In 8th place are download blockers
8th place is occupied by boot blockers. At the end of 2010, a blocker appeared that penetrates the boot area of the hard drive and prevents the operating system from loading. The criminal's demands appear on this screen. In seventh place are IM client launch blockers. The program blocks ICQ, QIP and Skype and when they are enabled, it displays a window stating that for further use of the service it is necessary to send money via SMS.
In 6th place are fake antiviruses. When checking the operating system with such an antivirus, a message appears on the screen that the system is infected, and to cure it, you need to purchase a licensed version of the product. In fifth place in the top 10 malicious programs are redirectors to malicious sites. When a user tries to visit a popular site, he ends up on a fake site that is very similar to the original site.
A message appears stating that you must pay money for full access to the site.
In 4th place are web server redirectors. These programs direct users to pages created by a web server that is installed locally on the computer. Thus, a malicious site cannot be removed until it infects the user's computer. In 3rd place are data encryptors. This program encrypts users' documents and demands money for decryption.
Windows blockers are on the second line of the rating. A window with a demand from criminals blocks all other windows until the user sends money to the criminals for unlocking.
Banking Trojans are in first place. These programs gain illegal access to bank accounts through remote banking systems. Moreover, the accounts of legal entities have recently become more popular, since they contain large amounts of money.
In addition to various malware for computers, the number of malware and programs for mobile operating systems continues to grow.
