The .ORG domain has surpassed 10 million registrations.
The Public Interest Registry (PIR), the administrator of the .ORG domain, announced that 10 million names have been registered in this top-level domain.
The ten millionth domain was JADFORUM.ORG, registered by Go Daddy.
The first domain to surpass 10 million registrations was .COM, which currently has 103.7 million active registrations. In 2008, the Chinese domain .CN surpassed the 10 million mark. In January 2008, approximately 13.5 million domain names were registered there; however, due to the complicated situation with the domain, there are now only 3.5 million registrations.
The third largest domain was .DE, the fourth was .NET; these domains passed the 10 million mark in 2006-2007.
The United Kingdom's .UK domain reported its ten millionth registration in March of this year.
Currently, in terms of absolute numbers, the .ORG domain is the sixth largest top-level domain (TLD), following .COM, .DE (15.2 million registrations), .NET (14.7 million), .TK, .UK (10.1 million).
Rounding out the top ten largest domains are top-level domains such as .NL (4.9 million), .RU (3.8 million), .EU (3.6 million) and .CN.
According to the Public Interest Registry, the largest surge in registrations in the .ORG domain has been observed since 2005, when the number of names registered there increased by more than 156%.
