.ДЕТИ vs. .XXX: Russia is preparing a porn-free domain zone

The launch of the .XXX domain sparked significant protests in many countries, as well as from religious and human rights organizations. In Russia, there were no active protests against this domain extension, but a few days ago, news broke of an initiative to create a special domain extension intended exclusively for children's content. Such a domain already exists internationally—the kids.us subdomain in the US national domain extension. However, this subdomain has never gained sufficient popularity.

The Coordination Center for TLD RU and representatives of the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation are among the initiators of the .ДЕТИ domain creation. Andrey Kolesnikov, director of the Coordination Center, is confident that any resource interesting and useful for children, for example, in the .RU zone, will be able to receive a second name in the .ДЕТИ zone.

The idea's proponents claim that the .ДЕТИ domain will be created as a counterweight to the pornographic .XXX domain. The Director of the Coordination Center for the National Internet Domain announced that the new domain zone will only host websites with high-quality content targeted at specific age groups. This domain zone aims to create a special "children's" space on the internet, safe for underage users.

Experts are confident that the popularity of the new domain zone will be directly linked to efforts to promote it, as well as government support, as the project to create this domain zone is not initially aimed at making a profit.

This domain extension will become available once ICANN has finalized its New gTLD (New Top-Level Domain) program. This is expected to happen by the end of June.

It is expected that domains in the .ДЕТИ zone will be registered by a public organization, which will also determine whether a resource meets the security requirements for receiving a name in this domain zone.
