The .LY domain is under Sharia threat.

The Libyan government banned the URL shortening service Vb.ly, and the corresponding domain name was de-facto. The alleged reason was that the service was used to shorten links to pornographic websites, thus contravening Libyan law and Sharia law.

Furthermore, the Libyan domain administrator stated that domains shorter than four letters can only be registered by Libyan citizens and companies and cannot be registered by non-residents of the country. This automatically poses a threat to other similar services, including bit.ly and ow.ly, as the .LY domain was actively used by URL shortening services.

Vb.ly representatives later reported that the Libyan domain administrator emphasized in his letter that the ban only applies to the Vb.ly project, and that other web address shortening services can be used without any problem; the ban was related solely to links to adult resources.
