Oman's .OM domain may receive new registration rules
The New Top-Level Domain (TLD) program has generated interest in a number of domains that are typos of popular domains.
.OM could become just such a typo. Currently, .OM is Oman's domain. However, a change to the domain's administrator, currently managed by the Oman Telecommunications Company, will be discussed soon. The country's national telecommunications regulator (TRA) or its affiliates could become the new owner.
TRA also administers Oman's IDN domain, which has been approved by ICANN. TRA plans to open registrations in both the Latin and Arabic domains to increase the number of domain registrations.
The .OM domain can be considered a misspelling of .COM, so it may be of interest to many companies. However, free registration is currently not possible. Only Oman residents and only third-level domains (e.g., example.com.om and example.net.om) can register names here.
Experts believe that the .OM domain could become as popular as .CO or .CM.
