The ".рф" domain was among the top events of 2009 on the RuNet.

The SuperJob.ru portal published the results of a survey of internet users regarding the top events of 2009 in the Russian-speaking internet segment. Approximately 27% of respondents named the introduction of the .рф domain extension and the acceptance of website registration applications in this extension as the most important events. This event was also deemed the most important by internet users.

Second place went to the launch of Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's personal blog, cited by 15% of survey respondents. Third place was tied for the emergence of digital drugs and the launch of the new Google Chrome operating system (4% each).

Interestingly, the rise in popularity of the microblogging service Twitter hasn't generated much interest among Russians. Among other important events, RuNet users highlighted the blocking of Facebook and Twitter during the Iranian elections, the emergence of Google Wave, the launch of the "Government Services" portal, "the increase in the number of lawsuits for online statements and court rulings," the rise in the number of Russian internet users, and the "flourishing of fraud" on the World Wide Web.
