The .SO domain zone will be open to everyone.

The .SO domain extension, the national domain of the Republic of Somalia, will be available to everyone. The registrar will make this domain extension available to everyone starting November 1, 2010. Initially, the domain will be open to commercial registrations. All other users will be able to register a domain here starting March 1, 2011.

The Sunrise Period, open to trademark owners only, will run from November 1st to 30th. From December 1st to 15th, domains will be available for auction registration, and another limited registration period will continue from December 16th to February 9th, 2011.

From February 10th to 28th, there will be a Landrush period – registration at inflated prices.

The standard domain price after March 1, 2011, will be $10 per year. During the Sunrise Period, the domain will be priced at $90.

The registrar company likely decided to open the possibility of registering in this domain zone to everyone, primarily because residents of Somalia itself do not have access to the internet, and providers and IT companies do not have the necessary equipment.
