The Soviet Union domain turned 21 years old.
September 19, 2011, marked the 21st anniversary of the .SU domain extension. The .SU domain was created in 1990. Currently, approximately 97,000 names are registered in this domain. More than 80% of these domains are delegated. More than 75% of domains in the .SU zone are registered by private individuals.
The domain extension was originally registered by the UNIX Users Association. The domain was registered a year before the collapse of the Soviet Union. In 1994, registration of .SU domains was suspended and resumed in 2002 after the Internet Development Foundation became the new administrator of the domain extension.
In 2006, ICANN discussed the issue of closing the domain, but later it was decided to keep this domain.
In 2011, approximately 5,500 new names were registered in the domain. Furthermore, it is noted that more than 50% of these names were registered in the last two years, indicating a resurgence of interest in the .SU domain.
In the .SU domain it is possible to register IDN domains, as well as short two-character domains.
There are approximately nine thousand three-character domain names, more than 700 numeric domain names, and 13.6 thousand domain names containing characters from the national alphabet registered in the .SU zone.
