.AT domains saved Austria €13.5 million in a year.

In 2009, the Austrian .AT domain zone contributed €13,500 million to the country's economy, and this contribution is growing every year.

An independent study by Professor Gottfried Haber of the University of Klagenfurt found that the initial revenue from the domain industry was €4.3 million, but when the actual revenue of registrars was taken into account, this increased to €7.4 million. Registrars of the .AT domain contributed a further €6.1 million to the Austrian economy.

The study found that for every euro spent on an .AT domain name, the Austrian economy benefited by €3.10. When additional features and benefits were factored in, this figure rose to €14.89.

The importance of domain names for the Austrian economy has grown significantly over the past decade. In 2000, sales of .AT domain names generated €2.5 million for the country's economy, while in 2009, this figure increased more than fivefold.

Thus, the more domain names registered in a country, the greater their contribution to the gross national product. The study found that an increase in the number of domains contributes to an average GDP increase of €268 per capita. At the same time, an increase in GDP of €1,000 is equivalent to adding two additional domains per 1,000 inhabitants.

The study also found that domain name registration creates hundreds of jobs, a figure that will increase with the growing importance of domain names and the introduction of new gTLDs.

Although the study does not provide an exact number of people employed in the domain name registration business, it does show that, compared to other industries, .AT domains are a powerful force in generating employment and increasing added value. New jobs are being created continually as the .AT domain market continues to grow, and the introduction of new top-level domains (TLDs) is a major benefit to the Austrian labor market.
