Two of the largest authors of the UDRP rules are against their reform.

The two largest authors of the UDRP domain dispute resolution rules oppose its reform: the National Arbitration Forum (NAF) and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

Representatives of NAF and WIPO made a corresponding statement at the ICANN meeting entitled “The State of the UDRP”.

A written statement from WIPO representatives was also released, stating that they believe the reform is being pushed by people who seek to weaken the protections provided by the UDRP to copyright and trademark holders.

As one WIPO executive said, the proposed changes do not inspire confidence that they will protect copyright holders.

Increasingly, even in high-profile legal disputes, the UDRP rules are not taken into account and are not used to protect intellectual property rights.

In particular, the authors of the UDRP domain dispute rules note that these rules will be under threat with the emergence of new top-level domain zones – New gTLDs.
