EURID is preparing to cancel the delegation of 9,000 .EU domains.

EURid, the administrator of the .EU domain zone, recently won an appeal against the cancellation of the delegation of 9,000 domain names registered in the .EU domain.

According to the court's decision, the company will now cancel the delegation of such domains, implementing the Brussels court's ruling in favor of EURid to revoke nearly 9,000 .EU domain names.

In 2006, EURid discovered that nearly 9,000 .EU domain names were registered in violation of the rules. Consequently, EURid initiated legal proceedings against the companies.

The Brussels Court of Appeal ruled in favor of EURid. Commenting on the court's decision, EURid stated: "As the administrator of the .EU domain, we adhere to the rules because we believe that registering a domain name is a very serious matter. If the rules are violated, we take all legal action, if necessary," said Marc Van Wesemael, CEO of EURid.

In its decision of 21 September 2010, the Court of Appeal ruled that a number of .EU names had been registered in bad faith and therefore their delegation should be cancelled.

The delegated domains will be quarantined for 40 days. They will then be available for 48 hours on October 24 and 25, 2011, for registration on a first-come, first-served basis. These .EU domain names can be registered by anyone who submits a technically compliant request through an accredited .EU domain registrar.
