Facebook plans to acquire startup Face.com
Social network Facebook plans to acquire the facial recognition service .com, a stake in which belongs to the Russian company Yandex.
According to various estimates, the deal could be worth anywhere from tens of millions of dollars to $100 million. Negotiations between the companies have been ongoing for some time, but the parties have been unable to agree on a price for a long time.
In 2010, Yandex invested $4.3 million in Face.com in exchange for 18.4% of the company. Analysts estimate that Yandex could receive between $14.72 million and $18.4 million in return for its investment.
Let's remember that Facebook recently completed one of its largest deals, acquiring the image-creation and editing app Instagram for $1 billion.
Face.com offers facial recognition technology. Its technology is used by Yandex, and Face.com apps are available for Facebook, Twitter, and the iOS mobile platform.
