GDPR: Complexity in Simple Terms
The General Data Protection Regulation came into force on May 25, 2018.(from English)General Data Protection Regulation,GDPR). The regulation explains the collection, storage, and transfer of personal data of EU citizens on the Internet.
But despite the new rules having been in effect for over two years, many clients still have questions and concerns. We want to dispel all the myths by explaining complex issues in simple terms.
Let's understand what GDPR is and how it impacts our work and the WHOIS service.

What is GDPR?
GDPR— This document aims to protect the personal data of residents of European Union countries from unscrupulous companies and give citizens the ability to independently control their data. The GDPR applies to all organizations that process the personal data of EU residents, regardless of geographic location. NIC.UA complies with GDPR regulations, so our clients can be confident that their personal information is secure.
How has GDPR affected the WHOIS service?
GDPR requirements also affected the operation of WHOIS, the protocol for searching for contact information about people who have registered a domain name.
Personal data in the WHOIS service is hidden for all international domain names if the contacts ("registrant," "administrative," "technical," "billing") contain data of EU citizens. This service is called "GDPR WHOIS Protection."
Hostmaster, the administrator of the .UA top-level domain, has expanded the WHOIS listing of its accredited registrars.
NIC.UA hides all customer contact information by default in Ukrainian domains, except in cases where the domain zone regulations prohibit hiding the data.

How and what personal information do we collect and how do we comply with the GDPR?
We leave the option for customers to unsubscribe from emails via the active “unsubscribe from news” link.
We do not collect data that we do not use in our work. NIC.UA clients provide personal data when registering on the website and when ordering the company's services. By registering on the website, you confirm that you have read and agree to thepublic contract, terms and conditions for processing personal data.
What data do we collect:
- all necessary contact information for domain registration - email, name, phone number, etc.
- online web session identifiers - browser, IP address, cookies.
- data necessary for mutual settlements, issuing invoices, reports or other documents.
How do we use personal data?
We use the information we have to provide:
- to our partners: domain zone administrators and registrars, bodies administering and supporting the Internet address space - solely for the purpose of providing services where the provision of personal data is necessary for the provision of the service.
- state bodies and persons who have the right to do so in accordance with the legislation of Ukraine.
How can you manage your personal information?
NIC.UA clients can revoke their consent to process their personal data. To do so, please send us the original application. In this case, the agreement is terminated on the date of personal data destruction, and all active services are discontinued.
