Cyrillic email will appear in a year

In June 2013, Cyrillic email will be launched in Russia. Addresses in this email will be available in the Cyrillic domain .РФ.

To create Cyrillic email, a special data exchange protocol was developed and implemented, necessary for converting Cyrillic names to Latin and vice versa. Each Cyrillic domain hides a long Latin name.

For example, an address like "name.rf" has a Latin equivalent: XN—H1AI1D.XN—P1AI. When attempting to read the address, the Cyrillic characters are automatically encoded into Latin. The email service must be able to recognize Cyrillic characters, convert them to Latin, and reverse the conversion.

The new protocol was created by an international community of designers, scientists, network operators and providers.

Representatives of the Coordination Center for the National Internet Domain are currently negotiating with representatives of major postal services regarding the implementation of the new protocol.

Currently, the number of registered domains in the Cyrillic domain zone .РФ is approximately 800 thousand.
