Google is ready to go to court over the GooglePlay.com domain name.
Google recently launched the Google Play mobile service, which will unify a number of its online services. Google Play will include books, music, apps, and other related offerings from Google.
However, the company does not own the domain name GooglePlay.com, which is taken, so Google will use the play.google.com domain to host the Google Play service.
However, Google filed an arbitration complaint against the Japanese owner of the GooglePlay.com website. The complaint states, "Our complaint is not related to the Google Play trademark. We are more interested in the question of why a domain name containing the word Google does not belong to the company."
Experts note that Google could win this legal dispute—the website's name contains a well-known brand name, and the domain itself is a duplicate of a recently registered trademark. Therefore, Google could easily prove that the website owner is prohibited from using the domain.
