Hitachi applies for the .hitachi domain extension
Hitachi, a leading home appliance manufacturer, announced a partnership with GMO, a Japanese domain name registrar. The collaboration is part of ICANN's "New gTLD" program, which allows for the creation of an unlimited number of top-level domains.
Hitachi plans to apply for the .HITACHI domain by the end of this year, once ICANN begins accepting applications.
Thus, the HITACHI company became one of the few that plans to perpetuate its name in the domain.
One of the first major multinational companies to create its own top-level domain was Canon, a global leader in digital equipment (.CANON). IBM, the world's largest manufacturer and supplier of hardware and software, also plans to create its own domain extension (.IBM).
