ICANN approves short and digital domain names for the .tel zone

Telnic Limited, the registrar of .tel top-level domains, announced that digital registration of short .tel domain names is now available to users. The registration was approved by the ICANN board of directors at a meeting held in January of this year.

Hashaiar Mahdavi, Managing Director of Telnic, thanked the ICANN board and staff for reviewing the recently submitted applications and providing more choice to businesses and individuals wishing to register .tel domain names.

Soon, companies with numeric or two-letter trademarks will be able to register .tel domain names, and individuals will be able to obtain unique or "lucky" numbers as attractive online identifiers. ASCII codes consisting of one letter and one digit, as well as names that could be confused with top-level domain codes of various countries, will not be registered.

Today, more than 300,000 .tel domain names are registered in 180 countries.
