ICANN announces solution to problem with new domain registrations

ICANN has officially announced that it has discovered problems in the top-level domain registration system.

As a reminder, on April 12, the last day for accepting applications, ICANN discovered errors in its registration system. At the same time, the organization announced that the registration system (TAS) would be shut down and the application submission deadline would be extended.

It has now been revealed that the error occurred when an applicant for a new domain zone deleted their application, for example to update the information contained in it and resubmit it. Upon deletion, the applicant could see the file name of another applicant, and thus learn the account name and the top-level domain name for which they were applying.

The error occurred on the last day because many companies submitted applications on that day, and testing failed to account for such an influx of users.

The exact deadline for accepting applications will be announced on April 20.
