ICANN approved the creation of the .XXX domain.

ICANN has approved the creation of the .XXX domain zone, intended for erotic websites.

The .XXX domain can easily be called the most discussed on the Internet – debates about its necessity have been ongoing since 2000.

Even during the final vote on .XXX, there was no unanimity among ICANN's Governing Committee members regarding this domain extension. However, the domain will be implemented thanks to the majority of committee members voting in favor.

The .XXX domain was first discussed back in 2000, when it was proposed by ICM Registry. The discussions were quite contentious, and in 2004, the domain issue was shelved. Religious organizations and family values advocates opposed the domain. Meanwhile, representatives of the erotic industry were already confident that this domain extension would help streamline the adult web.

In 2006, the ICANN Board of Directors again rejected the zone's launch. In June 2010, ICANN gave preliminary approval for the zone's launch, and this decision was formalized in 2011.
