ICANN has released details of applications for new domains.
ICANN has released details of the applications submitted for new top-level domains under the New gTLD program.
It was previously reported that the number of applications submitted was 1,900. Of these, applications were submitted for the registration of 1,400 new domains.
Legal entities could apply for new domains. Applications were accepted starting on January 12, 2012. The application deadline was extended to May 30, 2012, although it was previously planned to accept applications only until April 12. The extension was due to vulnerabilities in the TAS application system.
The cost of one application was $185,000. In addition, the applicant undertakes to finance the launch of their own domain zone and operating costs.
Given that several companies have applied for identical domain extensions, ICANN expects domain name disputes. The corporation has received 751 applications for 230 domain names.
The most popular top-level domain among applicants was .APP, with 13 applications submitted. Eleven applications were submitted for .HOME, and 10 for .ART. Nine applications each were submitted for .BLOG, .BOOK, .HOTEL, .LLC, and .SHOP, while 8 each were submitted for .DESIGN, .MOVIE, and .MUSIC. A total of eight applications were submitted for Cyrillic domains: .МОСКВА, .ДЕТИ, .КАТОЛИК, .КОМ, .ОНЛАЙН, .ОРГ, .РУС, and .САЙТ.
The application for the .КАТОЛИК domain zone was submitted by a legal entity registered in the Vatican, the application for the .ОРГ domain was submitted by an American legal entity, and the applications for the .КОМ, .ОНЛАЙН, and .САЙТ domains were submitted by legal entities from Switzerland.
Yandex applied for the .YANDEX domain, NIS-GLONASS applied for the .GDN domain, the Skolkovo Foundation applied for the .SKOLKOVO domain, and applications were also submitted for the .MOSCOW and .TATAR domains.
Google led the IT company in terms of number of applications, submitting 101. These included applications for the following domains: .GOOGLE, .ANDROID, .YOUTUBE, .GMAIL, .DOCS, .DAD, .CORP, .LOL, and .LOVE.
Amazon also filed a large number of applications – 76 in total. These included applications for domains such as .AMAZON, .KINDLE, .SEARCH, .NEWS, and .MUSIC. Google, like Amazon, applied not only for Latin-language domains but also for domains written in Chinese script.
Microsoft Corporation submitted applications for 11 domains, including .AZURE, .BING, .SKYPE, .WINDOWS, and antivirus developer Symantec wished to receive applications for six domains: .ANTIVIRUS, .CLOUD, .NORTON, .PROTECTION, .SECURITY, .SYMANTEC.
Apple has applied exclusively for the .APPLE domain. Canon, Dell, Cisco, Nikon, Sharp, Sony Corp, Sony Computer Entertainment, Sony Mobile Communications, Olympus, and Panasonic have also submitted one or two applications each.
Applications for new domains were submitted by representatives from 60 countries. The largest number of applications came from legal entities in the United States (911), while the smallest number came from Africa (17). Of these, 84 applications were submitted on behalf of various communities, and 66 applications were for domains associated with geographical names.
