ICANN will allocate the IDN domain "ge" (with non-Latin spelling) to Georgia.
ICANNN, the corporation that oversees the distribution of domain names, has decided to grant the request of a special commission and allocate the high-level IDN domain ".გე" ("ge") (with non-Latin spelling) to Georgia.
To register a national domain, the following criteria must be met: the domain name cannot be written in Latin script; the domain name must be in the official language of the country or region requesting approval; and certain technical requirements must be met.
The review of an application for an IDN domain occurs in three stages:
1. Preparing for the application. The domain being applied for must be approved by a majority of representatives of the country/region for which the IDN application is being submitted. The application must also indicate which organization will handle technical support for the domain and all necessary procedural matters.
2. String Evaluation. ICANN specialists check whether the application meets the three criteria for domain registration. ICANN receives applications through a dedicated online system.
3. Domain Delegation. If the application meets all the necessary criteria, the IDN domain is delegated in accordance with the standard ICANN IANA procedure, which also applies to the delegation of Latin American domains. The delegation of national domains is managed by the IANA.
To date, 23 countries have successfully completed the evaluation process, 17 of which have already received an IDN domain. A total of 16 languages and 16 distinct fonts were submitted. Arabic is the most popular language for IDN domains.
