IDN in the Estonian domain

The Estonian national domain (EE) will be updated with special technical specifications to support the national alphabet's umlauts (õ, ä, ö, ü, š, and ž). The national domain administrator announced this.

The exact launch date for multilingual domain names in .EE has not yet been announced. It is possible that it will happen in the second or third quarter of this year. The project is funded by the European Regional Development Fund.

The zone's administrators are currently considering the launch principles. Whether priority registration will be granted to trademark and trade name holders, or whether registration will be on a first-come, first-served basis, remains to be determined.

In early January, a reform of the Estonian domain was completed, introducing a registration fee and lifting some restrictions. Specifically, the domain was opened to non-residents and private individuals, a distributed registration system was launched, and the number of domains registered per person became unlimited. If the introduction of IDNs in .EE is successful, it will be another step toward democratizing the domain.
