The Internet uses 2% of global energy consumption.
Researchers from the University of California, Berkeley, and the International Computer Science Institute calculated that all internet-connected devices consume between 170 and 307 GW of power. The calculations were particularly challenging to account for, including routers, servers, mobile phones, and cellular base stations.
Experts have concluded that 750 million laptops and the same number of desktop PCs, 100 million servers, and 1 billion smartphones are connected to the Internet.
All these devices consume energy that accounts for 2% of the total energy consumed by the Earth's population.
The study's authors concluded that the development of energy-efficient devices will not significantly reduce global energy consumption. However, modern technologies such as video conferencing can help save costs, such as transportation.
