Domain Year 2011 in Review: Hostmaster Executives and .UA Administrator

- Please highlight, in your opinion, the main events in the domain market of Ukraine and the world in 2011.
Dmitry Kokhmanyuk: In the world, this event was certainly the ICANN board's approval of the launch of the new top-level domains program at its meeting in Singapore in June 2011.
For Ukraine, this includes the launch of the EPP project in Poltava and changes to the personal data protection regime.
A significant event within Ukraine was the launch of a public discussion process on the rules and regulations governing the operation of the domain space. The results of this process have already begun to emerge, but will become much more noticeable in 2012.
Svetlana TkachenkoIn Ukraine, collaboration between administrators, registrars, and other domain market participants on new documents for the .UA domain has become especially important. This collaboration has spurred many changes to the .UA domain that have been brewing for the past few years: the abolition or simplification of paperwork, the EPP pilot project, and the implementation of DNSSEC.
Tatiana DolinskayaI want to reiterate what Svetlana said: thanks to this collaboration, the reform process in the .UA domain has moved forward.
- What should we expect in 2012 that is so important that it could change the domain and hosting market?
Dmitry Kokhmanyuk: How exactly ICANN's New gTLD program plays out will be very important - namely, how many applications are submitted, which ones are approved, and how the process goes.
Furthermore, the outcome of the work in the US Congress on the SOPA and PIPA bills, which have provoked an unprecedented negative reaction from the overwhelming majority of major Internet market players and prominent Internet experts, will be very important.
Svetlana Tkachenko: The truly significant event will be the launch of the New gTLD program.
Tatiana DolinskayaThe implementation of DNSSEC and the IPv6 address protocol will begin to have an increasingly significant impact on the overall internet market. And, of course, the impact of the New gTLD program is difficult to overestimate.
Do you think Ukrainian registrants and registrars will be interested in the .XXX domain? Will this domain truly become popular worldwide?
Dmitry Kokhmanyuk: It’s hard to say. It seems to me that, given that in Ukraine there is a rather wary attitude towards sexual freedom in general and on the Internet in particular, there is simply no need to register such domains here.
Svetlana TkachenkoIn Ukraine, the domain won't generate much interest—currently, an address ending in .XXX immediately becomes an "aggravating circumstance" in disputes over website content. I would consider .XXX as another thematic top-level domain.
Are there any companies in Ukraine that would be interested in applying under the New gTLD program?
Dmitry Kokhmanyuk: I am not aware of any planned applications of this kind from Ukrainian companies.
