Cybersquatters are officially allowed to operate in the .RF zone.

Recent legal proceedings regarding domain names in the .РФ zone indicate that cybersquatters in the RuNet have been given the green light.

On December 10, the acceptance of applications for priority reservation of domain names in the .рф zone resumed. On November 25, priority reservation of domain names for government agencies and trademark owners began. The .РФ domain zone will become publicly available in March 2010.

The day after registrations began in the .RF zone, cybersquatters became active. Several companies registered the names "sex.rf," "kino.rf," "dating.rf," "striptiz.rf," "real estate.rf," "bank.rf," "credit.rf," "ipoteka.rf," "svadba.rf," "vstrecha.rf," "svidanie.rf," "music.rf," "football.rf," and others.

The companies obtained the right to register these domains by registering trademarks for unrelated product categories with Rospatent.

This loophole in the law allows one to circumvent the requirement that commonly used words cannot be registered as trademarks.
