Kodak loses patent lawsuit against Apple and RIM

Kodak failed to sue Apple and Research In Motion (RIM) for patent infringement.

Two years ago, Kodak accused Apple and RIM of illegally using its patented technology. According to Kodak, this technology was used in iPhone and BlackBerry smartphones.

Last year, the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) found Kodak's claims unfounded, but after an appeal, the case was remanded for retrial. According to the ITC's new decision, Apple and RIM are not guilty of patent infringement. Furthermore, the ITC decided to invalidate Kodak's patent.

As a reminder, Kodak filed for bankruptcy at the beginning of the year. The company hoped to recover funds from its patents, planning to repay its debts by selling its patent portfolio. Apple alone was owed over $1 billion in licensing fees to Kodak.

Kodak wanted to sell 1,100 patents at auction, which represents about 10% of its patent portfolio.
