The number of names in the .DE domain approaches 15 million.

The administrator of the .DE domain, DENIC, announced that the number of domains registered there is approaching 15 million.

Reaching this milestone makes DE one of the largest ccTLDs – country-code domain zones – especially when measured by the number of domain names registered per person.

DENIC surpassed the 14 million mark on November 26, 2010. This means that 500,000 new domains appeared in .DE in less than seven months, meaning that it took a little over a year, or about 14-15 months, to get another million new domains.

The figure of 15 million domains means that every sixth person in Germany has a domain in the national domain zone.

DENIC also calculated that the .DE domain grew even faster in late October/early November 2010 after it began using special characters from the German alphabet (such as ß).

There are currently 14.881 million domain names registered in the .DE domain.
