Yahoo has acquired the Me.Me domain for its microblogging service.
The domain was purchased at the Sedo online auction. The name, in the Montenegro domain extension (.ME), will make it one of the shortest website addresses available today, including for microblogging services.
Yahoo plans to use Me.me to improve the brand and visibility of the social service meme.yahoo.com.
Yahoo hasn't been in much domain news lately, but the company has recently sold several domain names, such as MusicVideos.com, LookUp.com, and FreeComputers.com, as well as Contests.com.
It's worth noting that Yahoo doesn't own the Meme.com domain name, which would be the most logical for its Meme service. This domain is currently owned by software developer The Meme Factory. Perhaps in the future, Yahoo will decide to rebrand and move its service to Me.me instead of meme.yahoo.com. Such a move would make the Meme.com name even more valuable. This would also be good news for domain owners who previously purchased attractive .ME domain names.
Currently, the number of domains in the .ME zone exceeds 390,000. Its popularity is largely due to its ability to create a domain name that calls to action. This is achieved by adding "me" at the end of the web address. Most .me domains attract attention because they are simple and memorable web addresses.
