Motorola faces lawsuit over Xoom tablet name

San Francisco-based Xoom Corp. is accusing Motorola Mobility of infringing the Xoom trademark as the name of its tablet computer.

Xoom provides online money transfer services. The company began operations in 2003, and the corresponding trademark was registered in 2004.

The company filed a lawsuit in San Francisco federal court, accusing Motorola of intentionally and unlawfully misappropriating the Xoom brand and trademark rights in order to deceive consumers. The plaintiff will likely seek an injunction against the defendant's further use of the Xoom brand and compensation. Motorola representatives have not yet commented on the matter.

As a reminder, the 10.1-inch Xoom tablet, powered by the second-generation NVIDIA Tegra platform, went on sale this week. It costs $600 with a two-year Verizon Wireless contract. A non-tethered version will cost $800.
