Today, cryptocurrencies are no longer ignorable. Bitcoin, altcoins,coins and tokens, are becoming increasingly popular among companies and individuals. Some issue their own tokens, while others use cryptocurrency to accept payments. However, some companies that announced their intention to accept cryptocurrency payments later abandoned the idea. In addition to potential financial risks, there's also the issue of tax reporting. Therefore, accepting cryptocurrency payments is often done through instant conversion to fiat, mostly on the buyer's end.

In the United States, more than 2,000 companies accepted cryptocurrency payments, while in Ukraine, there were approximately 80 companies that announced the possibility of this payment option.

And also in Ukraine it was createdstate cryptocurrency fundto collect donations to support the Ukrainian Armed Forces and citizens affected by the war, and many other supporting crypto projects.

One of the reasons for the popularity of cryptoassets is their independence, decentralization, and ease of use. Virtual currency is not backed by the state and is independent of banks. Information about transactions and the addresses used to conduct them can be viewed on the blockchain in real time. This makes financial processes much simpler and faster.

The benefits of using cryptocurrency in business

There are several obvious reasons for the popularity of cryptocurrencies among individuals and business owners:

Safety and speed

Transactions using cryptocurrency are much faster and easier than with fiat money. Cryptocurrencies use encryption to verify transactions. A special key is used when transmitting and processing data. It's fast, simple, and secure.

Cryptocurrency information is stored on the blockchain—a digital ledger or public registry for recording transactions. The history of all transactions is recorded in the block chain. It is impossible to rewrite the blockchain's history, which guarantees security.

Reducing intermediaries

With cryptocurrencies, you can eliminate the need for banks as intermediaries. The core idea of cryptocurrency is decentralization, meaning neither banks nor governments have control over it. Users can see every transaction on the blockchain.

Low commission

Payment services operating in the market charge a certain fee for processing transactions. For example, PayPal charges about 4% per transaction.

With cryptocurrency, these fees are virtually zero, which is a big advantage, especially for smaller companies.

Disadvantages of cryptocurrency in business

Along with the advantages, there are also certain disadvantages, so-called "gray areas." These include the following factors:

High volatility

Cryptocurrencies are highly volatile, meaning their value can fluctuate significantly over a relatively short period of time. In 2021, for example, Bitcoin prices fell by 30% in a single day.

Lack of regulation

Cryptocurrency is decentralized, which has both advantages and disadvantages. Decentralization means there is no regulation from any central authority that guarantees security, such as the Financial Conduct Authority or the National Bank. Therefore, there are no rules or regulations protecting businesses.

Recognition and dissemination

Cryptocurrency is still far from universal acceptance. It's not a generally accepted means of payment for most people. Some people don't trust cryptocurrencies enough, even if they have wallets and coins.

Vulnerability

Cryptocurrency assets are also vulnerable to cyberattacks and hacks, which can lead to loss of funds. Trojans exist that steal cryptocurrency from mobile devices.

Loss of virtual wallet and data theft

Losing the key or access code to your virtual wallet or having it fall into the hands of third parties may result in the loss of funds.

There is also a risk of data theft from websites by replacing a phishing link with a website link. Be aware of this, be vigilant, and don't neglect security. You can useSSL certificate, creating an encrypted connection between the visitor andwebsite. Data transmitted over this connection is protected from theft and interception. And the choice of a uniquedomainand reliablehostingwill provide additional protection.

Cryptocurrencies in Ukraine

In Ukraine, there are offline and online companies accepting cryptocurrency payments. Recently, it became possible to even purchase real estate with cryptocurrency – one Ukrainian developer offered this service.

The country's cryptocurrency regulations are becoming clearer. In Chainalysis's global cryptocurrency usage ranking, Ukraine ranks among the leaders in terms of transaction volume and user activity. At the end of 2020, the Ukrainian parliament adopted the Law on Virtual Assets, which granted cryptocurrencies legal status but did not recognize them as a means of payment. On February 17, 2022, the Verkhovna Rada re-adopted the Law on Virtual Assets in its second reading, with amendments by Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and created the National Commission on Securities and the Stock Market. On March 15, the President signed the Law on Virtual Assets, legalizing the Ukrainian crypto sector.

What changes follow the adoption of the law?

  • legalization of Ukrainian and foreign crypto exchanges;
  • opening bank accounts for crypto companies;
  • protection of the population's savings in crypto assets;
  • state guarantee of rights to virtual assets.

Functions of the National Securities and Stock Market Commission:

  • regulation of crypto-asset activities;
  • regulation of the order of circulation of cryptocurrencies;
  • issuing permits to virtual asset service providers;
  • Supervision and financial monitoring in the cryptosphere.

This means the legalization of the crypto sector in Ukraine and its withdrawal from the shadows.

Resume

Cryptocurrencies have certain advantages, such as high transaction speed, decentralization, and transparency.

On the other hand, these platforms have certain disadvantages such as volatility and lack of mass acceptance and usage.

It's unlikely that Ukraine and other countries will switch en masse to cryptocurrency payments in the next few years. However, it's worth noting that cryptocurrency is gradually becoming a full-fledged player in the Ukrainian financial market, with all its pros and cons.
