Mark Zuckerberg bought the domain name for $8.5 million.

The founder of the world-famous social network Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, bought the domain fb.com from the American Farm Bureau Association (AFBF) for $8.5 million.

Zuckerberg announced the domain purchase back in November 2010 at the presentation of the new Facebook Messages service. However, no figures were disclosed at the time. Yesterday, AFBF reported a profit of $8.5 million from the sale of some domain names, without naming the buyer. It's not hard to guess that this is exactly the amount Mark Zuckerberg paid for fb.com. This price for a domain seems enormous, but compared to the prices of other popular domains, the amount doesn't seem so high. The most expensive domain name, sex.com, sold for $13 million. The first domain name, facemash.com, on which Mark Zuckerberg launched Facebook, was sold at auction in November 2010 for $30,000.

Facebook intends to use this domain only for its employees. As a reminder, the company paid only $200,000 for its primary domain. Other Facebook domain names include facebok.com, facebooksafe.com, saferfacebook.com, facebook.me, and face-book.com. Furthermore, the company plans to obtain official permission to use the word "face" as a trademark in all forms of media.
