Microsoft and Facebook launched a document collaboration service
Social networks are among the most popular online services today. Social connections between internet users on the modern World Wide Web are one of the main tools for influencing user choices. Social features have become an integral part of various online services. Therefore, Microsoft is increasingly focusing on integrating social elements into its software products and online solutions.
Recently, Microsoft, in partnership with Facebook, unveiled a new online document management service, Docs.com. This service allows multiple users to create and edit documents simultaneously, and also includes features for maintaining social connections between users.
The service supports documents in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint formats. Users can share their documents with their Facebook friends, and customize their friends list—documents can be shared with everyone or with specific users. A list of documents the user is working on can be displayed on their Facebook page.
To use the service, you only need to be registered with Facebook. Currently, the service is in closed beta testing mode and is not available to the public.
Docs.com is built on Microsoft developments, specifically the online office suite Microsoft Office 2010. Documents can be created directly in a browser window through the Docs.com interface or using the client version of Microsoft Office—an offline suite of applications from the latest version of the suite.
