Pingdom experts have published their final Internet statistics for 2009. According to their data, there were 234 million websites worldwide in 2009. This number increased by 47 million over the past year.

At the same time, 187 million websites are hosted on top-level domain names. Their number has increased by 8% over the past year.

At the end of the year, there were 81.8 million domains in the .COM zone, 12.3 million in .NET, and 7.8 million in .ORG.

Google remains the leading search engine (66.8% of the market), followed by Yahoo! (7.2%), China's Baidu (6.5%) and Microsoft's Bing (3.1%).
