Registration of short .INFO domains has begun.

Afilias, the administrator of the INFO domain, announced that it has begun accepting applications for one- and two-character domain names in the zone. Applications can be submitted until April 30, 2011.

A year ago, Afilias submitted requests to ICANN for approval of a plan to lift restrictions on the registration of short .INFO domains. These domains were initially reserved by ICANN itself and were unavailable for registration by internet users.

The registration application must indicate that the user will use the .INFO domain in good faith. Registration of the short .INFO domain will cost the applicant $1,000. The administrator reserves the right to reject the application.

Following the .INFO registration period, an auction will begin for domain names that were not registered by April 30th. Following the auction, open registration awaits ".INFO enthusiasts."
