New gTLDs will launch this summer.

This March, the 40th International Conference will be held in San Francisco, where the corporation's Board of Directors will approve the final version of the "New gTLD Applicant Guidebook." With this decision, the Board will take a step forward in launching the New gTLD program, which envisions the creation of an unlimited number of top-level domains.

If the discussions and the launch of the program, which will take place on March 17, 2011, are successful, ICANN will begin accepting applications for new top-level domains as early as the end of August or beginning of September of this year.

The results of the discussions on the creation and implementation of new top-level domains, which took place at the ICANN Colombia meeting in December 2010, showed that the rules for the New gTLD will be quite strict. Applicants seeking their own domain will be required to make significant financial investments, thoroughly research all aspects of domain name registration, and develop a substantial technical infrastructure. However, the corporation is already developing a special incentive system to avoid excluding certain categories of applicants from the New gTLD process.
