In its latest Domain Name Industry Brief, Verisign presented domain statistics for the first quarter of 2011. According to these data, the number of domains worldwide increased by 4.5 million and reached 210 million.
The number of names increased by 2.2% compared to the previous quarter. Over the previous 12 months, the increase was 15.3 million, or 7.9%.
According to Verisign, the total number of domain names in the .COM and .NET domain extensions reached 108 million, representing an increase of 8.3 million registrations, or 9.2% year-on-year and 2.7% quarter-on-quarter. There are 95 million registered names in the .COM domain.
Overall, .COM was the largest TLD, far ahead of the German domain .DE with 14.4 million registrations. In third place was the .NET domain with about 13 million, followed by .ORG (which reached 9 million registrations in early March), .UK (United Kingdom – 9.4 million), .INFO, .NL (Netherlands – 4.4 million), .EU (European Union – 3.3 million), .CN (China – 3.3 million), and rounding out the top ten was .RU (Russia – 3.3 million).
Statistics for all ccTLDs (country code top-level domains) excluding .CN, as of May 25. .CN registration statistics were last published on February 28, and given its decline over the past year, it's likely that .CN ranks, at best, in tenth place.
The number of ccTLD domain registrations increased by 2.1% quarter-on-quarter and 5.1% year-on-year, representing a total increase of 81,700 domain names. The top ten ccTLDs were: .DE, .UK, .NL, .EU, .CN, .RU, .BR (Brazil), .AR (Argentina), .IT (Italy), and .PL (Poland).
The number of re-registrations in .COM and .NET domains increased to 73.8% in the first quarter of 2011. In the fourth quarter of 2010, this figure was 72.7%.
