The document will serve as a guide for registrars providing Cyrillic domain registration services in Bosnian, Bulgarian, Belarusian, Macedonian, Montenegrin, Russian, Serbian, and Ukrainian.

This document describes considerations for the use of Cyrillic characters, which are similar in spelling to Latin and Greek characters. It contains the necessary character tables and corresponding Unicode code points.

The creation of a standard is a necessary step in combating phishing, when squatters register similar Cyrillic characters in domain names, replacing real domains in the Latin alphabet.

The emergence of the standard will expand the boundaries of the use of Cyrillic characters in domain name registration.

The first registry to use the RFC standard, even at the development stage, was TELNIC, the registry for the new .TEL domain.
