The social network VKontakte will soon permanently switch to the shortened domain name vk.com. Users attempting to access the social network's website through the previous domain vkontakte.ru will be redirected to vk.com.

The social network purchased the vk.com domain in August 2008. Back in the summer of 2011, the project planned to migrate to the vk.com domain within a month, but any deadlines for this were later cancelled.

According to company representatives, vk.com is "twice as short, prettier, more convenient for typing on mobile devices, easier for foreign users, and simpler to develop."
